Now We Ride Out The Doldrums

Now I know how the atmosphere in Muddville must have felt like the morning after Casey struck out. Saturday morning was cold, wet, and appropriate to the mood of the city and the state. The Wings ran out of time, ran out of gas, and for the first time in a few years looked injured and maybe a little old. It’s easy to say the Wings are the better team…but the fact is the Pens just beat us in a best of seven series where they certainly outplayed us a lot of…if not the majority…of the series. I don’t have a good thing to say about their Captain, but the Penguins have a hell of a team...and we just might see them again next year. Paybacks are a sonofabitch, and now we know how it must have been for the Penguin fans to see the Wings skating around their ice a year ago. Yup...I have a little Red Wings hangover blues right now...but that's a step ahead of the Dave Dombrowski 'what the hell am I going to do with Dontrelle Willis' blues.

There’s a lot of luck involved in a Stanley Cup…maybe more than any other championship. In 2009, the luck of the Red Wings ran out just a few games early. The fact is that we were unlucky and had a ton of injuries….now that the series is over, that becomes even more evident. It also just solidifies for me that pound for pound hockey players are the toughest guys on the planet. Nick Lidstrom suffers an injury classified as ‘a nearly catastrophic testicle injury’ and he’s playing within a few days??? If I get a nearly catastrophic testicle injury, I think I'm taking the rest of the year off.

It didn’t end the way a Wings fan would want it to…I understand that. It hurt me and my brother-in-law is as big of a Wings fan as I am a Michigan fan…so I know how he must feel. The fact is though that we went to Game 7 of the Finals a year after having the Cup. It was a great season…and with the Wings being the best franchise in all of professional sports, you can bet they’ll be ready next year. In a difficult environment with the economy in Michigan, our Wings provided some precious hours of distraction and entertainment for the people of Michigan.

Now we play out the string of Tigers game praying they can stay in front of their division through the All-Star break and beyond. Until then, it’s the happy doldrums of another beautiful Michigan summer….and wait for mid August and start firing up for the lifeblood of all maize and blue faithful.

I’ve heard a lot of Michigan fans getting their excuses together for another 6 loss season…and I’m doing my best to talk them off of the ledge. I have great expectations for the 2009 Wolverines…and I feel very good about our chances against anybody we take the field against. Michigan Football will be back in 2009.
